Monday, September 5, 2016: The Canadian stock market continues to do well so far in 2016, while the US market is still underperforming Canada's this year. 

The Canadian dollar has been fairly steady lately, up about 6.5% year-to-date against the greenback. Oil and bullion continued to more or less tread water as well in the last month. More here.

Some other updates from money4retirement.ca:

• The August 2016 OSC fantasy portfolio reports for growth and income have been published. The fantasy growth portfolio was up 7.9% year-to-date as of August 31, and is ahead of its own annual target and benchmark. The fantasy income portfolio was up 4.9% year-to-date, and it too is ahead of its own annual target benchmark. You can view the latest OSC fantasy portfolio results here.

• The portfolio challenge between the OSC fantasy portfolios and Warren Mackenzie's "David and Gayle" portfolio standings for the end of June were reported early in August. Both OSC fantasy portfolios were ahead. More can be found here. We'll be looking for more information (the June portfolios themselves) and the third quarter top line results before the next Ottawa Share Club meeting in October from Warren.

• I have provided a couple of posts about my lastest thoughts about our own household portfolio and my upcoming trading day in September here and here. By and large I am looking to fill out a couple of positions and re-balance down our gold bullion holdings (for the second time this year). I also hope to top up a couple of existing higher risk holdings and sell another higher risk holding to free up some cash. I plan a couple of other clean up trades as well.

• At one point in early August, depending on what indexes/ETFs you use to represent sectors, all major sectors were in positive territory for the year. More here.

• The Ottawa Share Club did not meet in August. As a reminder, the 20th season of the Ottawa Share Club will begin on Tuesday, October 11th. The full schedule and meeting location can be found here.

• Don't forget there will be an OSC Steering Committee meeting on Tuesday, September 13, at 5:30 PM, at the Prescott Hotel, 379 Preston St, Ottawa, to continue planning the upcoming season.
